My chest tightened painfully as his cruel words hit me. | couldn’t even move my hand to clutch at the ache,
frozen in place as | stared at the heartless man before me.
Just moments ago, I'd been thinking of thanking him for saving my life. What a joke - he was nothing but a
complete jerk.

| squeezed my eyes shut, gripping the rough hospital sheets until my knuckles turned white. My nails dug
through the fabric, nearly breaking skin.
‘Keep it together,’ | told myself.
When | opened my eyes, he was still there, waiting for a response. Did he seriously expectto defend myself
against his ridiculous accusations? | wasn’t his property - | didn’t owe him any explanations.

My voice cout weaker than intended - the accident had really done a number on me. My throat felt Tike
sandpaper.
| glanced at the water glass on the bedside table. When | tried to reach for it with my right hand, | couldn't even
lift it. The glass might as well have been miles away.
Kane just stood there watching me, right next to where the glass sat. Instead of helping, he remained rooted to
the spot, his eyes boring into me.
| looked up at him. His face was twisted with anger - so different from last night after the accident. Though
everything had been hazy, | remembered seeing worry in his eyes then. Maybe I'd imagined it.
How could someone like him worry about me? It seemed impossible. But then why did he save me? He could
have just letdie and watched it happen.
“What do you want from me?” | asked, frustration building.
He shoved his hands in his pockets, studying my face.
Was he really so blind to my thirst? If he wouldn't do anything else, he could at least helpreach the damn
glass.
“You can’t giveanything. | know exactly what you're doing - trying to make it look like you're doingsome
kind of favor, right?” he sneered.
“What?”
“Drop the innocent act. This body...” He jabbed a finger toward me, his face cold as ice. “This body means
nothing tonow. You're not even attractive anymore. Who knows how many men have had

His disgusting words madewish the floor would open up and swallowwhole.

Tears welled up in my eyes as my heart hammered in my chest. It wasn’t because of our mate bond or his
proximity - it was because my heart couldn't take any more of his cruelty.
| took a shaky breath. “If that's what you think of me, why did you save me? Why not just letdie? Was that
your way of doinga favor too?”
His expression flickered with surprise. Clearly, he hadn't expectedto talk back with such confidence. But why
shouldn't I? | hadn't done anything wrong.
“You've got snerve,” he growled through clenched teeth.
Rage blazed in his eyes, but | couldn't understand why he was so angry. He'd acted the sway when he saw
new target.
If I had to guess, either he was obsessed with his reputation, or he wanted to control my life completely.
Simply put, he wanted to treatlike his personal puppet - I'd only breathe when he allowed it.

“Stop playing innocent. Does that guy even know what you really are? Or did he approach you because he
realized what kind of woman you are? How could you cheat a Beta with his own Alpha? Have you no shleft,
Selene?” He shook his head in disgust.
Tears streamed down my face. | tried to wipe them away, avoiding his cruel gaze, but once again forgot about
my injured hand. | bit my lip to hold back a cry of pain.
Tregret helping you with your father. | regret saving someone like you last night.”
Those last words made my heart crack.
He regretted saving me?
I slowly raised my head to meet his gaze. Kane leaned down, his face inches from mine, makingpull back
slightly.
Suddenly, his strong hand gripped the back of my neck. | winced in pain - the bandage around my head made
his touch feel like torture.
| remained silent, staring into eyes that held nothing but hatred for me.
“You know what | want right now? | want to kill you right here in this hospital bed.”
My heart stopped at his words. My wolf heard his threat too - it was finally clear to her that he didn’t care about
us at all.
Through tear-filled eyes, | glared at him.
“You're not my Alpha, and | don’t owe you any explanations. | can be with whoever | want - you're not my
husband anymore, you can’t control me. Just wait until | leave your pack, Alpha Kane. Because soon you'll regret
everything you're saying right now.”
