My phone lit up with Magnus’s call. As much as | wanted to answer, | hesitated.
“Great. Magnus probably saw the mess already.”
| let it go to voicemail and got ready to head out. But he called again as | was walking out.
This t| picked up, but before | could say anything, Magnus jumped in: “Did that jerk do something to you?”
| debated whether to tell him what really went down.
“Magnus, we just talked. That's all.”
“Bull! | saw that picture! Where did that creep take you? How dare he put his hands on you?”
“Magnus, chill. Axel’s here with me.”
“Yeah, and where was he when that jerk dragged you off somewhere? Tellstraight up - did he do anything?
Did he get out of line?”
| swallowed hard, staying quiet.

“Hello? You still there?”

“Magnus, you've got it all wrong. I'm fine, really. I'll be hsoon.”

“What about Dr. Grayson? Did you meet him?”
“Yeah, he said he’d inviteover sometime.”
“That's good news, right?” Magnus was obviously trying to get my mind off all this .
He’s been looking out forlike this for years now. He knows exactly when I'm stressed.
“Totally. | mean, that’s why | chere in the first place. Hey, did you hear about the announcement?”
“Yeah, we'll talk about that when you get back.”
“Okay.”
After hanging up, | headed out into the hallway. People were already givinglooks - guess they'd seen the
picture. The whispers started immediately.

| tried to ignore them, but my mind kept going back to last night. The way Kane just barged into my room,
questioninglike he still had sclaim on me.
| couldn’t help but think back to when | was his wife. He never gavethe right to ask where he was or why he
didn’t chome. His answer was always the s- he was with Ruby, and | was just getting in their way.
So what's his deal now?
Pretty sure Kane's ego just couldn't handle seeingdoing fine without him.
| sat in the hotel lobby, trying to sort through my thoughts, when this young woman cup to me.
“Ms. Selene, congratulations!”
| gave her a blank look. “Sorry?”
She laughed when she realized | had no clue what she was talking about.
“We saw Beta Axel’s posts. Congrats to you both!”
| sat there stunned. The woman looked pretty high-class - probably dating someone in the pack. As soon as she
walked away, | grabbed my phone and checked my notifications.
My jaw dropped.
Axel had posted a public statement saying | was his fiancée and we’d be getting married soon.
| totally didn’t see that coming. But | got why he did it - he was trying to save my reputation.
The comments were blowing up about how lucky | was to have a Beta like Axel stepping up to support
me.
“Axel, you're something else,” | mumbled. “How am | ever gonna make this up to you?”

| was having the perfect spa day when my omega maid crushing in.
“Madam, we've got trouble.”
| rolled my eyes and pulled the cucumber slices off, giving her an annoyed look. “What now?”
“Beta Axel just announced that Selene is his fiancée.”
| froze. No way. How could this happen? How could anyone want her? She’s nothing special. How could a hot-
shot Beta like him fall for someone like her?
“Show me,” | snapped.
She handedmy phone, and sure enough, there it was. Beta Axel had totally cto her rescue.
It made my blood boil. That woman is the reason Kane hasn't madehis Luna yet. He's never even brought up
marriage.
I was so relieved when she divorced Kane and hit the road.
But now she shows up again, probably trying to sink her claws back into him. She must be kicking herself for
leaving the most powerful Alpha. If she’d known Kane would turn out like this, bet she would've never left.

Last night was humiliating. Kane ditchedfor her. Worse, he didn’t even introduceto any of the other
