It was Kane. | hadn’t known his wolf was black. His fur was pitch dark, and his eyes burned a deep crimson-just
like the ones | had read about earlier today.
| locked eyes with him for a long moment. His wolf was massive, so imposing that if he ever revealed himself to
others, no one would dare cnear him.
He took a step toward me, snappingout of my trance. | realized | had been staring at him too long.
Quickly, | averted my gaze and turned away.
“Letshift. | want to meet my mate,” my wolf, Dominic, urged inside me. She only ever stirred when Kane was
close.
| silenced her immediately. “No. He is no longer our mate.”
As | started to walk away, a low growl rumbled from behind me.
| turned my head just in tto see Kane's wolf moving toward me. He was coming straight for me.
| froze as he drew closer, his presence overwhelming. My instinct kicked in, and | raised a hand in warning.
“Don’t cany closer. I'm not your mate. We're breaking the bond soon.
I shouldn't have said that.
Because the moment the words left my mouth, he lunged.
With one powerful leap, he tackledto the ground.
Shock paralyzedas | struggled against him, trying to push him off. But instead of attacking, he lowered his
head and began licking my neck-right where Kane had markedthe night before.
“Stop it. Letgo!”
He ignored me.
| wasn’t sure if Kane was in control or if his wolf had completely taken over.
“I hate you, Kane! Get off me!” | shouted, my voice echoing through the trees.
At my outburst, he stilled. His head lifted, and he gazed atwith an expression that sent a shiver down my
spine.
I swallowed hard.
Slowly, carefully, | lifted my hand and placed it on his head.
His crimson eyes fluttered shut, and he leaned into my touch, as if savoring the contact.

That's when | understood-Kane’s wolf still sawas his mate.
After a moment, he pulled away and sat beside me.
| pushed myself up and looked at him, his eyes still closed. “You shouldn't be attached to me. Our destinies are
different. But... it was nice meeting you.”
This wasn't a battle between our wolves. It was a battle between Kane and me

Our wolves could speak to us, feel our emotions, share our pain-but in the end, we were the ones who
made the choices.
As | stood up, Kane's wolf opened his eyes.
And in an instant, they clouded over.
| took a cautious step back.
Kane was regaining control.
Did he really just let his wolf accept my touch? Why? He could have forced him to stay away. Didn't he realize
how protective wolves were of their mates?
| exhaled sharply. “Don’t follow me.”
I knew it was Kane now.
Without waiting for a response, | turned and walked in the opposite direction.
| didn’t know where | was going-I just knew | didn’t want to be near him.
| walked for what felt like forever, my exhaustion creeping in. The forest was so vast that getting lost here meant
never being found.
| pulled out my phone, but there was no signal.
| tried texting Rachel anyway, but the message wouldn't send.
A knot of worry twisted in my stomach..
“I never should have chere in the first place,” | muttered bitterly.
Just then, | heard footsteps behind me.
I turned around-and there he was.
Kane.
He had shifted back into his human form, wearing only a pair of black jeans. His bare chest was on full display,
his muscles taut under the moonlight.
He must have shifted and thrown on his clothes afterward.
| quickly looked away. “Why are you here?”
“I could ask you the sthing,” he said, stepping toward me.
| had no idea how to respond.
A few minutes ago, | had been petting his wolf. Now, standing face-to-face with him, | felt a wave of
embarrassment.
| said nothing and turned to walk away.
“You're lost, aren't you?” he asked.
| clenched my jaw. “I've never met a more ruthless man than you, Kane Thorne. You were the one who spread
that fake news, weren't you?”
| didn’t stop walking.

“You haven't answeredyet,” he said, his voice calm. “But you're right-I did post it. Don’t you want to know
why?”
| halted, then turned back to him with an icy glare. “To humiliate me?”
His expression darkened as he shook his head. “No. To send a message to your brother.”
My breath hitched.
Why would he want to prove something to my brother? What had my brother ever done to him? They barely
even exchanged words the last tthey met.
Kane smirked. “I heard that in your pack, your brother's word is law. That's impressive. But he needs to
understand-things won't always go according to his plans.”

| had no idea what this insane man was talking about.
“Go to hell.”
| turned sharply and started walking in a different direction. There was way as him.
“I know all the paths in this forest,” he called after me.
| scoffed. “What, are you a park ranger now?”
no way | was going the same
“Think about it. No matter which way you go, you won't find your way out. Accepting my help wouldn't kill you.”
| spun around to face him. “Your help? Not a chance, pervert. | haven't forgotten what you did tolast night.
You know what? Stay the hell away from me-because if you don’t, there won't be anyone around to stopfrom
killing you.”
His gaze darkened at my threat.
| rolled my eyes and continued walking.
Then, suddenly-
“Ahh!”
A sharp sting shot through my ankle.
| looked down and saw a thorn lodged in my skir
With a wince, | reached down and yanked it out. Pain flared through my leg as | straightened up. preparing to
walk again.
