Chapter 10
Kane
Since Selene left the pack, I'd been staying at the corporate apartment.
For whatever reason, | couldn’t bring myself to go back to the house.
Today was my scheduled visit with my father, so | drove to the pack house.
When | walked in, | found my father pacing the living room.

His mood was clearly off. | approached him, though I couldn’t figure out what had him so worked up.
“Dad,” | said.
He looked atand asked, “Why are you drinking yourself stupid every night?”
| kept quiet. | couldn't care less.
| didn’t owe him an answer to every question.
He'd ruined my life by blackmailingwith something that was rightfully mine to begin with.
My life would've been completely different if | hadn't given in to him and married Selene two years ago.
When my father noticed my silence, his expression darkened. “Cto my study,” he ordered.
| followed him, aware of my mother watching us quietly. | wanted to ask her what was going on but held back.
Whatever it was, I'd hear it from him soon enough.
| stepped into my parents’ room, taking in the familiar surroundings.

After shutting the door, my father said, “Word is you're planning to marry Ruby.”
| stopped short, frowning. | hadn’t promised marriage to anyone. | had no idea who was spreading these rumors.
Though truthfully, Ruby deserved to be with me. | owed her everything | was today. Marriage to her wouldn't be
the worst choice for my future.
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Are you really going to marry that snake?”
His description of Ruby madewince. How could | make him understand that she was the only one who'd
stood by me?
But | didn’t want to explain myself, so | just asked, “What's wrong withmarrying Ruby?”
My father growled, his eyes flashing red as he punched me.
| clenched my fists, fury rising. Only the fact that he was my father keptfrom retaliating.
Anyone else who dared lay a hand onwould've gotten their arm broken.
My father launched into a tirade. “I chose the perfect woman for you. She took care of you for two years. And
what did you do? You divorced that innocent woman. And now what? You want to marry
that home-wrecker?”
“Dad, please.”
“Please? Please what? You should've said ‘please’ when | was breaking the pack bond with Selene.

That poor girl had to leave the pack because of you.”
His words madewonder if I'd stopped my father that day, would she have stayed?
| left the pack house seething, driving back to my place.
Walking in, | spotted a woman in a white dress.

| froze. She had her back to me. ‘Selene? | thought.
“So you finally cback,” | said sarcastically,
The woman turned around, greetingwith a broad smile.
“Kane, you're home?”
| stepped back. “Ruby!”
| was shocked to see her-wearing Selene’s dress, no less.
“What's wrong? Not happy to see me?” Ruby asked, walking toward me.
| frowned. “Why are you wearing Selene’s dress?”
She looked uncomfortable at the question.
“| spilled coffee when | got here. I'm just borrowing something to wear. She won't mind, right?”
Looking at Ruby in that white dress bothereddeeply. | couldn't explain why, but | hated it.
Ruby wrapped her arms around my neck, leaning in.
Just as she was about to kiss me, all | could see was Selene wearing that sdress.
| pushed Ruby away.

She looked stunned.
| glared at her. “Don’t ever wear her clothes again. They don’t suit you.”
Ruby froze, then lowered her head and nodded.
| saw tears running down her face. I'd scared her, but I didn’t care. No one was supposed to have this kind of
power over me.
Yet somehow, | was affected. Something was irritating me. | hated it. Every t| tried to get close to Ruby,
Selene’s face invaded my thoughts.
Why?
Each day ended with my mind in chaos. That woman was drivingcrazy even in her absence.
“I'll be at the bar tonight,” Ruby said softly.
| turned to look at her. My eyes caught the scar on her right arm. That scar remindedof how Ruby had risked
her life to save mine.
| sighed, regretting my harshness. | shouldn't treat Ruby this way, not after what she’d done for me. | took her
right hand, and she immediately turned to hug me. | hugged her back, even though | felt nothing.
She loved me, and | couldn't just use her as an emotional punching bag. She was important. | needed
